Holistic dentistry adopts an entirely distinct strategy to oral care compared to conventional dentistry, particularly in terms of the materials selected and the methods employed. Over the course of four appointments at holistic dental practices, my experiences have been profoundly different from any standard dental visits I’ve encountered before. The positive impressions left such a strong mark that I now willingly travel one and a half hours for every dental appointment. To me, the journey is absolutely justified by the benefits. It’s refreshing to attend a dental office where my preferences for avoiding fluoride applications and root canal procedures are met with understanding rather than judgment.
Approaching the Patient’s Overall Well-being
Also referred to as integrative dentistry, alternative dentistry, or biologic dentistry, holistic dentistry places emphasis on the interconnectedness between oral health and the body’s overall condition. The state of the mouth serves as an indicator of systemic health throughout the body. Practitioners aim to manage oral issues in a manner that promotes healing across the entire organism.
For example, conditions like tooth decay and periodontal disease often correlate with systemic issues such as diabetes or heart disease. During my latest appointment, the dentist identified that my body was struggling to properly metabolize proteins, recommending supplementation with a specific enzyme to address this imbalance.
Additionally, I had the unique opportunity to observe a real-time microscopic view of my oral environment. This live feed revealed the movement of blood cells and various bacteria. The dentist pointed out that my white blood cells appeared robust and healthy, which I attribute to my regular consumption of kombucha. However, the imaging also highlighted the presence of certain bacteria known to promote tooth decay. Rather than merely patching up potential cavities, the focus shifted to eliminating these harmful microbes at their source. Although I didn’t have any active cavities, proactive measures were suggested to prevent future issues.
Effective strategies to combat and eliminate these detrimental bacteria include consistent professional cleanings, proper daily flossing techniques, incorporating an electric toothbrush into your routine, and using specialized oral rinses designed to target and eradicate harmful bacteria.
The accompanying image captures the live microscopic video from my visit, showcasing the dynamic activity within my mouth. This visual demonstration was captivating, and I greatly appreciated the detailed explanations provided by the staff. They patiently described each element visible on the screen, assessed my current oral health status, and offered personalized recommendations to optimize it further.

Fluoride Treatments
Despite endorsements from organizations like the American Dental Association, holistic dentists refrain from administering fluoride treatments. This decision stems from insufficient scientific backing for its safety profile, coupled with evidence of its toxic effects. Concerns include potential impacts on brain function, bone density reduction, and disruptions to thyroid activity.
Safe Dental Materials
Holistic practices outright reject mercury-containing amalgam fillings due to their potential adverse health effects. Moreover, they employ specialized protocols for their safe extraction. Recently, I underwent the removal of all my longstanding silver fillings, which dated back to my childhood. I’ll share more details on that process in due time.
In place of these traditional fillings, holistic dentists utilize biocompatible materials carefully chosen to harmonize with each patient’s unique physiology and needs.

Digital Radiography
Conventional radiography involves substantial x-ray exposure and the use of developing chemicals that pose health risks. In contrast, holistic dentistry leverages digital radiography technology, which captures detailed images of the teeth in mere seconds with minimal radiation and no hazardous chemicals.
Alternative Treatments
Holistic dentists incorporate innovative alternatives, such as laser therapy for gum disease management. This method effectively disinfects microbial buildup and eliminates inflamed tissues, paving the way for natural regeneration of healthy gum tissue. Other offerings include treatments for persistent bad breath and homeopathic solutions. These approaches prioritize resolving underlying causes rather than merely masking symptoms, providing more comprehensive and lasting results.
